Personal

I am a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney, and I have been teaching here at the Institute since 1986.  My graduate work was in the philosophy of language, but in recent years my focus has been moral philosophy and Christian ethics – especially the “virtue ethics” associated with the thought of Thomas Aquinas.  My current research focus is in the philosophy of the human person – especially the metaphysical issues concerning the soul, immortality, resurrection of the body.  Another topic of interest concerns the spiritual destiny of the human being in relation to our evolved being as members of the animal world.  In this area, I am also interested in the thought of Edith Stein, the German phenomenologist-philosopher who became a Carmelite nun and was executed by the Nazis.  Stein sought to integrate the “objective” metaphysics of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas with the “subjective” emphasis of modern thought.

I am also a research associate at the Plunkett Centre for Ethics in Health Care at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. http://www.acu.edu.au/Research/flagships/plunkett_centre_for_ethics

Since 2004, I divide my time between the Catholic Institute and the parish of Summer Hill, for which I have pastoral responsibility.  Our parish website is: http://users.bigpond.net.au/St-Pats-SummerHill/
